Atonement (2007)
5/5
2008-01-20 08:44
It's been about a week since I went to see Atonement at the theater and I can't get it out of my mind. I am haunted by the images and feelings of sadness and longing. I keep watching the trailer online just to catch a glimpse of the story and renew those feelings of awe. Everything about this movie.. the developed characters, the amazing acting, the haunting music, the beautiful set dressings, and simply the tragic storyline make this my new favorite movie of all time. Highly recommended.

Casino Royale (2006)
5/5

By far my favorite of the James Bond films. I have never been so drawn in by the franchise as I was in this movie. I was afraid that Daniel Craig wouldn't work in the role but I was wrong. His masculine and somewhat-brutish Bond is so much more appealing to me. I'm a little obsessed with his character in this movie and really want to own it!

I have loved this movie since my first viewing (I now own it and continue to watch it over and over). It's cute without being saccharine; inspiring without being preachy; and fun without being sensationalistic. I love Queen Latifah.. her character's transformation from quiet and low-down Georgia to upbeat and fabulous Ms. Byrd is just so inspiring. I always squeal at the end.. so fun!

25th Hour (2002)

Simply the best of Spike Lee. The depth of the characters & dialog, the brilliant score by Terence Blanchard (I also own the soundtrack), and the simplicity of the story make this a powerful movie that I continue to watch again and again.

Great kids movie. It was entertaining to reminisce about some of the books I read as a kid but other than that I'm all set.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)
1/5

Ugh.. where to even begin. Yes, Cate Blanchett did a wonderful job, as usual. Yes, the costumes and music were dead-on gorgeous. I can't describe it but there was just something that was overdone. There was one point that was supposed to be very dramatic and I felt myself almost laughing at the ridiculous music and dialogs. I know it might have been stretching history a bit, but I was also a bit disappointed that she didn't at least shag Sir Walter Raleigh.. come on! She's the queen! She should be able to do what she wants (and probably did)! Oh well.. not recommended.

Scoop (2006)
2.5/5

I was actually kind of bored watching this movie. I like a lot of Woody Allen's movies but I found that this one kind of dragged. It could have been the mood I was in when I watched it but I can't be sure. Liked: Hugh Jackman. Hated: Scarlett Johansson.. I'm not usually a huge fan of hers and there was just something about her in this movie that drove me nuts.

The Illusionist (2006)
3/5
2007-09-19 10:09
This movie was entertaining. It was creatively filmed and although I'm usually a fan of Norton, I thought his accent to be a little forced. Giamatti and Biel, however, were fantastic. It sort of sets the viewer up for a 'Usual Suspects' type ending but without much of the shock value. It was very refreshing, I have to say, to see a dark drama end with a very happy ending. It left me satisfied.

The Holiday (2006)

Second viewing. Although there were some serious flaws, I thought this movie was cute. Our first viewing of this was in London's Leicester Square in January. Although I cannot stand Cameron Diaz, nor did I buy the bad boy Jude Law playing against type and real-life personality, it was completely redeemed by the always wonderful Kate Winslet and Jack Black. Love to both of them. At first, I wasn't sure about Black playing it straight, as I've always liked his fun characters (see High Fidelity and School of Rock), but I have to say - he was adorable. When I first read of the casting, I was a bit miffed that they would automatically put Winslet and Black together (on the surface, a seemingly 'fun, quirky' couple to Diaz-Law's 'beautiful, perfect' couple) but after seeing the film, I'm pretty sure that most intelligent people realize that they both Winslet and Black got the better half of the bargain.
Winslet + Black = Hooray!
Bad acting Diaz-Law = Boo!
Beautiful Sets, Scenery, + Music = Hooray!

Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
3.5/5

Had some good parts, some bad parts. Overall, the ending saved it from being not-particularly entertaining. Love Maggie Gyllenhaal and Will Ferrell.. not particularly enamored with Emma Thompson (also usually a favorite) playing a seemingly drugged out author but can appreciate her need to break out of her typical role.

Same Time, Next Year (1978)

Interesting idea.. loved the transformations that the characters when through over the years. Didn't particularly like Ellen Burstyn's character at first but as the years went on she became more and more interesting. Definite must see.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
1.5/5
2007-09-05 08:56
I loved the first two X-Men movies and although I was never a huge X-Men buff, I knew enough to know that it couldn't get any better than Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart. I was really looking forward to the third movie, particularly when I saw the preview and knew that it would center around Jean Grey/Phoenix. Of all the comic book stories that I've heard (and there have only been a few) this story was by far the most interesting to me. It was interesting enough without having to involve a 'mutant antidote' and without the sensationalistic killings of Cyclops, Professor X, and ultimately Jean herself. This movie, in straying from the original story line and editing key parts of the characters back stories, was a huge disappointment. This was my second viewing of the film and although there were some fun parts (I loved it when the angel-boy freed himself and also when we got to meet new mutants with new cool powers), it ultimately failed because of some key points/plots that I did not like (in particular, the power-stripping of both Magneto and Mystique and the deaths of the other characters). Boo.

Superman Returns (2006)
4/5

Second viewing.. still love Brandon Routh! The only thing that bothered me was Kate Bosworth. I usually love her but I thought she was a little young to be playing Lois Lane. She's a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist with an 8 year old son and she's only 23? I know they tried to make her look older but I wasn't buying it.

Shopgirl (2005)
4.5/5

Novels that have been made into films are often hard to judge, particularly if you read the novel prior to seeing the film. Personally, I loved the novel, despite the creepiness of Ray Porter, and was anxious to see the film. I was also aprehensive, as it is a rare (in my humble opinion) to find a film that can truly do justice to the themes and characters explored in a novel. I believe that this is one of those rare films. This was my second viewing and I think that the film only gets better with repetition. The casting was superb! While reading the novel, one can't help but think of Steve Martin as Ray Porter (despite my unending view of him as George Banks). I loved Clair Danes as Mirabelle and Jason Schwartzman as Jeremy - their chemistry together was adorable and believable. Overall, the highlights of the film for me were the acting, the cinematography, and the music. Despite a few awkward moments, I thought the film was, on the whole, heartfelt and sincere.

Pride & Prejudice (2005)
5/5
2007-08-21 13:13
This is my non-stop watch movie of the week. I am partial to the BBC version, but this one holds up surprisingly well. Although Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen could never top Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth in my mind, I thought they did a wonderful job - as did the rest of the cast. The scenes in the movie are lush and beautiful, particularly the first proposal scene (my favorite in the book and both movies). I always sit up at that part, holding my breath on the edge of my seat as he struggles with the words. It is exactly how I would have imagined it. Despite myself, I always end up sighing deeply with my hand over my heart as he says "I...I love you... most ardently." Ooh I also love it when Mr. Bingley says to Jane "First, I must tell you I've been the most unmitigated and comprehensive ass," and then slips to one knee... that always makes me squeal! Although the BBC version is the standard, this one offers so much that I almost think it should be judged on a different scale.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix...

Saw it at the IMAX theatre in 3D and it was amazing! I'm a little disappointed that they left certain things out but what can you do? The book was so long.. I feel bad for anyone who didn't read it! Is it me, or does DR become more and more attractive as each year goes by?

Stepmom (1998)

I've seen this movie a handful of times before but it never really gets old. I love the chemistry between Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts and the story is just so sad. I loved that the movie portrayed a non-traditional family celebrating some very traditional moments. I've never cried more in a movie (even after the 10th time).

Something New (2006/I)
4.5/5
2007-07-29 18:40
I absolutely loved this movie. I thought that it indeed was 'something new'. It was cute and fresh, a different take on an old story with a classic moral: follow your heart above all else, don't let anyone else interfere. This is something that I have struggled with time and time again so I could really appreciate the main character's struggle. It's so hard not to let parents, society, magazines, movies, and general public opinion sway what you think you want. It was inspiring to see a young woman going for it -- despite the judging looks and the sneering mother, she danced with her boy and had a great time right in the middle of the dance floor. Also, it didn't hurt that Simon Baker is gorgeous. Just what I needed on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
